 How to use: 

Prep the surface: Always start by lightly sanding your part with a one thousand grit sponge to create a rough surface for the paint to grip, then brush away any dust.

Thin your paints: Sponge painting requires acrylics to be "extra runny" compared to standard brush painting. Use a pipette to precisely thin your paint; if it is too thick, the sponge will stick and create a grainy texture, and if it is too thin, it will cause large bubbles.

Load the sponge: Dip only the edge of the sponge into the paint, and then work it slightly on your wet palette to remove the excess.

Application technique: Keep the sponge slightly angled and proceed right to left (or left to right if you are left-handed) rather than tapping back and forth. This allows the clean middle section of the sponge to level the color and pop any potential bubbles.

Pressure and pacing: Tap the surface lightly without pressing hard or sliding the sponge, which can squeeze out a blotch of paint or wipe away your progress. Apply three or four light coats to get a smooth, clean finish, allowing the paint to dry between each layer. Use the corners of the sponge to reach hard-to-get spots.

Pro tip: 

Maximize sponge lifespan: Do not throw away a dirty sponge; simply grab a pair of scissors and cut away the used layer to keep reusing the clean foam underneath. Additionally, keeping the sponge angled while you paint leaves the opposite side completely clean for another color.

Natural highlights: Use a smaller sponge held by a grabber tool to apply a lighter shade of your base color to the corners of your parts. Make the first layer basically invisible, and slowly build up multiple applications to create a natural, faded transition without harsh lines.

Easy weathering and panel lining: Prime your part in black before applying your base color. Work your layers more heavily on the sides while leaving the center less uniform to create a nice weathered effect that also naturally avoids filling in the panel lines.
