Master Sponge Painting for Mecha Models

Weathering and texturing can make or break a custom mecha build. While airbrushing gets a lot of attention, one of the most effective and accessible techniques is sponge painting. We recently broke down this entire process in our latest video tutorial, showing you exactly how to achieve battle damage and chipped paint effects with minimal setup.

The Core Technique Sponge painting is all about control and layering. You do not need a complex setup to get started. The secret lies in using the right density of sponge and ensuring you offload most of the paint before it ever touches your kit.

Step 1: Preparation Start with a primed and base coated piece. Make sure your base layer is completely dry and ideally protected with a clear coat. This gives you a safe working surface.

Step 2: Loading the Sponge Tear off a small piece of sponge. You want an uneven, jagged edge because a perfectly flat cut will leave unnatural patterns on your model. Dip the very tip into your acrylic paint.

Step 3: Offloading This is the most critical part. Dab the sponge onto a paper towel or your wet palette until there is barely any paint left. If it goes on too heavy, it ruins the scale effect. You want a very dry consistency.

Step 4: Application Lightly tap the sponge along the edges of the armor parts where natural wear and tear would occur. Focus on corners, feet, and shield edges. Build the effect up slowly.

Tools Used in This Build To get these results, having the right supplies makes the process much smoother. Everything used in the video is available right here in the shop.

Next Steps Try this technique on a spare armor piece or an older kit first. Once you get the pressure down, it will become a staple in your customization process. Drop a comment below the video if you have questions about paint consistency or sponge selection.
